It’s that time of year. It’s the annual Moonlight Ramble hosted by our good friends at BikeHouston. This will be their 38th year doing this event and it’s still going strong and still one of the funnest rides, not only because it’s at night but it’s late at night. Not to mention, everyone comes out with their bikes decked out in lights, sounds and gizmos-a-plenty.

Here are a couple videos we captures from last year’s ramble on Halloween night as we caught a couple people that night.

Ever since PedalHouston has gone up, it has been quite the pleasure to meet a lot of the bike organizations around Houston. One organization in particular is BikeHouston. Not only have I been able to learn what they are all about and who runs it but more importantly, it’s given me the chance to get to know the people.

It has been a great experience working closely with them and assisting in bring BikeHouston.org back with a new energy to the online community and to the Houston bike community. Their relaunch of their website just shows that there is a continued and active pursuit to make Houston a bike-friendly and accessible city. I have had the honor of meeting and getting to know the people behind this organization and the possibilities are endless. The potential for this city to become a bike commuter city is welcomed and feasible. Now it’s a matter of there being a strong social presence to show that we want it.

Thanks to Darren Sabom and Aaron Chang of BikeHouston for giving PedalHouston the chance to work with you guys. This is only the tip of the iceberg with what we can do for the city and bikes.

Please do not forget to check out their bike shops page – it is ridiculously resourceful for those new to the city or just don’t know where the bike shops are around your neighborhood. It’s about time that this has been finally done!

Keep them bookmarked as they will be sharing a lot of useful city information and updates about what’s going on with the City of Houston, local projects and their annual Moonlight Ramble ride.

Don’t forget to also add them on twitter: twitter.com/bikehouston and on Facebook: facebook.com/BikeHouston.

Tell ‘em PedalHouston sent ya!

Houston and bikes just got a lot more exciting. Let’s go!!

It’s a briliant idea as shown in thsi vid after the jump:

So Foursquare seems to be this social media tool that some people have figured out and some haven’t. Some see it as pointless, some see it as fun and some don’t realize how powerful of a tool it can be for one’s business.

Foursquare basically is a social tool that lets you “Check In” to locations and possibly show you who else may also be there if they checked in also. What’s the point? It’s almost a social experiment. It shows you “trending now” areas where there may be a lot of buzz because a lot of people are there, as well as it also can help you find some place around your vicinity and you can look up “notes” people have left about those places.

What does this have to with PedalHouston?

It has everything to do with PedalHouston. It’s a social community. Where there’s people, there’s a following. What would be great is if bike stores use these tools to give discounts to “mayors” of certains stores, coffee shops have some kind of treat if you check in while riding your bike and maybe use foursquare to promote places that have “free water” or “free air” for cyclists. Wouldn’t that be cool?

Chris Brogan linked a cool article from StartupNation about “5 Ways to Use Foursquare to Market Your Location-Based Business”

Great tips for bike stores!!

On June 24, PedalHouston had their first Thursday Night Social Pub Crawl. I just want to personally thank everyone who showed up. It was interesting to hear how people had heard about the event and the feedback on the event as well. It is great to see this social experiment work.

Patrons meeting up at the Heights Bike Trail in front of Sawyer Heights Lofts

More after the jump…

We had 20 people show up for the event and that well exceeded expectations and a great group to start off with. Definitely got to hand out a couple t-shirts that I hope to see people wear around the city!! But it was also great to see such a diverse group of people all somehow social and connect with each other.

More people showing up before the event

What is great is that some people would have never found these bike trails or the bars that we hit along the ride. It is social. If people like it, hopefully they will bring more friends out with them on the next one and it helps promote local businesses also. If you’re a local business that want us to come your way, let PedalHouston know!

Socializing soaking wet at Onion Creek Cafe after riding from the Shiloh Club in the rain

The ride was safe, it was controlled but in no way was it not fun. It was relaxed and it is just a matter of looking out for each other to get from point A to point B. Or in our case from Bar A to Bar B. There were a lot of happy faces and everyone made some new friends. Let’s hope this is just the beginning of some great things for the bike community in Houston. If you’re interested in another one, let’s do it! Got any ideas for other types of rides? Leave a comment. Til then, keep riding!

One more plug: BIG UPS to FATMANONABIKE.COM! Thanks for the awesome review and hope to see you on the next one!
